Fingers of Prayer

Upwards they stretch
Taunt twigs of impassioned pleading
Beauty stripped
By yearly age
The garments of their covering
Windswept into memories
Of greener days
Gnarled and knotted
The elixir of hope that rose
Branching upwards
Straining with fervent faith
Drains down
Sinewy, venous
Skeletal like tracks
Whispered scratching
Coded prayers cast on winds
Asking gods of wind and rain
To be gentle in the winter of discontent
Thatin the spring,
They’ll don once more
Leaves, fashioned green
